Insulated Impact Glass
Impact-resistant glass is comprised of two panes of glass bonded together with a special interlayer of clear polyvinyl butyral (PVB). A combination of this glass and vinyl frames provides amazing protection that can withstand blow after blow by a nine-pound, 2 x 4 beam traveling at 34 miles per hour, followed by hurricane-force winds.

Ineffective Hurricane Options
During the major hurricanes that hit the southeast in 2004-2005, there were no reported home failures of impact windows and doors. However, there were a great many failures associated with plywood protection, and a number of homes failed that had shutters protecting the windows, primarily due to faulty installation.
