Vinyl vs. Aluminum Impact Windows: What’s Best for Your Home
By Alex Mustelier, General Contractor, Florida Solar & Air
Impact windows are constructed of many different materials varying in strength and energy efficiency. The strongest impact windows are made of aluminum construction. Vinyl impact windows with steel or aluminum reinforcements are strong as well, but will not reach the same design pressures as aluminum impact windows. This is why large structures such as condominium and commercial properties often use aluminum impact windows exclusively.
However, when considering impact windows for your home, it’s important to note that vinyl impact windows are the most energy efficient because the Solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC) and U factors are lower. Wood clad windows are the weakest and typically can’t be installed in municipalities in South Florida that require engineering.
